HOLY COMMUNION

Our Policy
We invite to the Lord’s Table those who have been baptized in the name of the Triune God; have been instructed as to the meaning of Holy Communion; live in relationship to Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord; and accept our confession in respect to Holy Communion.

In case of doubt, guests may consult with the pastor, or one of the elders prior to the time of worship.  On the other hand, if you believe what has been set forth above, we do not want you to miss out on Christ’s invitation to you because you were unable to locate the pastor or elder.

“The best preparation for Holy Communion is that a soul, deeply moved by sins, death, and temptations, hungers and thirsts for healing and strength.”  MARTIN LUTHER

Preparatory Prayers may be found on page 128 in the hymnal.
Questions regarding the Lord’s Supper may be found on page 306 in the hymnal or Psalm 51 on page 329.

Distribution
The pastor serves as celebrant with support from the elder or worship assistant on duty for that service.  This is done to emphasize that the sacraments are given to the people of God and to make the leadership of our lay people visible to the congregation.  In this way, we remain mindful that the church is the people of God and not just the clergy.

The distribution of Communion is done in a “continuous” fashion.  With guidance from the ushers, people approach the altar rail when there is room, and after receiving the sacrament and taking time for prayer, they return to their seats.  The blessing is done once at the end of the distribution, not for each separate table.

Children who are not yet eligible to commune are welcome to come to the table with their family to receive a blessing. When this is done we ask them to keep their hands beneath the rail to avoid confusion about whether or not they are there to partake.
